19th Century Science: 1820-1894

The science of this era would experience some wonderful expansion during the 19th century.  Much of this was due to the fact that the position of "scientist" became a paid position.  Both universities and industries hired scientists to promote their schools or to work directly for industry.

The leading aspect of science during this era has to be the Theory of Evolution.  The idea of evolution was not a new one, but was definitely brought to the forefront by Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace.  The controversy tied to this theory began almost immediately with many scientists agreeing with the theory and many others not willing to accept it.  Much of the idea of evolution began when Darwin was working on a ship called the Beagle.  This ship went to the Galapagos Islands where Darwin saw land formations and plants that definitely intrigued him.  However, the study of finches and orchids were the impetus for the Theory of Evolution.

Other highlights include:

1. The discovery of Neptune
2. Mammal eggs
3. Java Man
4. Cave Paintings
5. The idea of Tectonic Plates
6.  Food Chains, Webs and Pyramids
