Industrial Revolution Science

With the need for various ores and for coal, geology gained prominence during the Industrial Revolution.  In fact, the term "geology" would be coined during this era.  Scientists also began to wonder how the Earth was formed.  Obviously, with all this study of the Earth, fossils and the understanding of them would also grow.  Major role players in geology will include William Smith, Abraham Werner, and James Hutton, plus many others.  Science will for the first time truly become a public endeavor.  With the release of the Encyclopedia by Denis Diderot, the general public could read about the ideas and knowledge of science.
